Fantastic Europe (Roma etnic minority Mitrovica, Kosovo)
Ten years after the war and the NATO intervention in Kosovo, 160 Roma refugee families are still living in camps on one of the most toxic waste tips on the verge of Europe. Between the crossfire of Serbian and Albanian extremism in North Mitrovica, this camp tells a tale of despair. The camps were built close to the Trepca lead mine. The factory was closed by order of the UN administration in 2000. The soil is heavily contaminated, the children have some of the highest measured levels of lead, arsenic and cadmium ever recorded. Despite promises that they would be moved from their 'temporary' accommodation on waste tailings in the year 2000, little has happened ever since. Nevertheless the European Parliament urges – in the 26 november resolution – the local authorities to close down the camps and provide proper housing for the families.
